Utthana Ekadashi (commonly known as Prabodhini Ekadashi) is celebrated during the Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. This day is exceptionally joyful as it marks the awakening of Lord Vishnu from His four-month Chaturmasya sleep. It is also the auspicious day of Tulasi Vivah, celebrating the divine marriage of Srimati Tulasi Devi (the sacred basil plant) and Lord Shaligram (the sacred stone form of Krishna).
In ancient scriptures, Lord Brahma explained the great glory of this day to Sage Narada. He stated that the merit earned on Utthana Ekadashi is absolute, destroying sins as large as mountains. Any small spiritual activity performed on this day, such as chanting, offering lamps, or reading scriptures, brings millions of times more benefits.
The legend speaks of the demoness Vrinda, who was a pure and chaste devotee of Lord Vishnu. Due to her chastity, her demon husband Jalandhara was invincible and terrorized the universe. To defeat him, Lord Vishnu had to intervene in a complex way, which eventually led to Vrinda transforming into the sacred Tulasi plant, and the Lord blessing her that He would never accept any offerings without her leaves, and would marry her as Shaligram.
On this day, Vaishnavas decorate temples with clay lamps, sugarcane arches, and perform the majestic Tulasi-Shaligram wedding ceremony. It marks the end of Chaturmasya, opening the gates for all auspicious ceremonies like weddings. Observing this fast with pure devotion grants direct entry to the eternal Goloka Vrindavana.
