Utpanna Ekadashi occurs during the Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha (Keshava) month. It is celebrated as the absolute birth of Ekadashi. Observing this fast is essential as it is the foundation of all Ekadashi practices, explaining how this holy day got its legendary power.
In ancient times, a powerful demon named Mura terrorized the three worlds, defeating Indra and all the demigods. The helpless demigods ran to Lord Vishnu for protection. The Supreme Lord fought the demon Mura for ten thousand years, but the war seemed endless. Tired from the combat, Lord Vishnu retreated to a cave named Himavati in Badarikashram to rest.
The arrogant demon Mura followed the Lord into the cave, intending to kill Him while He slept. Suddenly, a beautiful, fiercely glowing maiden holding various weapons emerged from the body of the sleeping Lord Vishnu. She possessed cosmic strength and instantly destroyed Mura with a thunderous roar.
When Lord Vishnu woke up and saw the demon slain, He was amazed. The maiden introduced herself as His own spiritual energy. Pleased by her courage, the Lord blessed her, named her 'Ekadashi' (as she appeared on the eleventh day of the waning moon), and declared that anyone who fasts on her appearance day would be fully cleansed of all sins and achieve His eternal abode. Thus, Ekadashi Devi is the supreme protector of all devotees.
