Pausha Putrada Ekadashi occurs during the Shukla Paksha of Pausha month. As 'Putrada' means the giver of a son, this day is highly glorified for childless parents who seek to be blessed with a noble, healthy, and spiritually-minded son to carry forward their lineage.
In the beautiful kingdom of Bhadravati, there ruled a highly pious King named Suketuman and his Queen Shaibya. Although they had complete wealth and peace, they were deeply grieved because they had no children. The King was constantly in anxiety, wondering who would perform his funeral rites and provide water offerings to his ancestors.
In deep depression, the King left his palace and rode into the dense forest. After wandering for hours, he arrived at a beautiful pond where several great sages (vishwadevas) were reciting scriptures in their hermitage. The King paid his respects, and the sages, pleased by his manners, asked what he desired.
The King explained his deep sorrow of childlessness. The sages advised him that the upcoming Pausha Putrada Ekadashi was the absolute remedy. The King fasted strictly with full devotion. Soon after returning, the Queen became pregnant and gave birth to a brilliant, righteous prince who ruled the kingdom in full glory. This story highlights the absolute child-bestowing grace of Pausha Putrada Ekadashi.
